CHARACTERcharacter name | Sinbad - given the full name of Sinbad ibn Badr Ahl-Tison – shorten to Sinbad Tison by immigration bureaucracy - for AU purposes as he has no patronym or surname in canon
age | 30
subject | Near East Languages
gender | Male
appearance | He appears as a clean-shaven man of middle-eastern descent with wavy, inky black hair that has an almost violet sheen in bright light with a stubborn cowlick and amber-colored eyes, standing about six feet in height with a broad-shouldered, muscular build that he is quite proud of. Sinbad often looks like he's on the verge of breaking out into a broad grin, though he has a worry line between his thick, dark brows.
Sinbad dresses mostly in western clothes – black or navy suits, but with a touch of “The Orient” – hooped earrings, and wearing slightly more jewelry than considered appropriate – jeweled cuff-links, an elaborate watch-chain, and several rings on his fingers. And despite prohibition (and the misconceptions others may have of his private life) he carries a pewter hip flask in an inside coat pocket. When going outdoors, he wears a bowler hat – liking it because it covers his cowlick and it doesn’t blow away easily in the wind.
While he has no current use for them, he has a keffiyeh and other traditional clothes in storage in case he needs it.
history |
History - Missing some key events from the prequel manga.
-Sinbad meets Yunan, who unbeknownest to him was a Magi, and he was encouraged to enter the Dungeon Baal, making a friend out of Commander Drakon, and obtaining the Djinn Baal before fleeing the country.
-He ends up in Imuchakk, meeting Hinahoho, and having to rescue him from Valefor's Dungeon while being tailed by Drakon, Ja'far and his cohorts, he ends up rescuing the latter, gaining their loyalty as he reveals his goal is to create a country to make a world without war.
-Sinbad goes to Reim to found a Trading Company, and once established, he sets off to Sasan and Artemyra to open trade - and more importantly set up an alliance for his future country.
-Once he returns, he discovers that a rival merchant has tricked his company into going into debt, and he makes a risky gamble to save it, resulting in him becoming a slave to a cruel woman who uses torture and psychological manipulation to turn slaves into her obedient children. He eventually snaps out of her control and regained his freedom from his rebellion and his friends pulling their own con to force the slaver into debt, forcing her to turn everything over to them.
-With that over, and at least a dozen kids under their care, Sinbad decided now was the time to found their country and they set off to discover unclaimed territory.
This is where the Prequel finishes, as it's still on-going.
AU history | Sinbad was born among a minority ethnic group in the Ottomon Empire in what is now Iraq to a disabled war veteran and a kind, but sickly mother, unfortunately when he was seven, his father was killed during the young turk’s rebellion, the seemingly senseless violence caused him to hold a life-long hatred for war and strife.
As a child, he had shown an exceptional gift for languages, picking them up quite quickly as he obtained a job as courier and translator in Medina. There he drew the attention of both foreign merchants and intelligence officers for his quick wits and his charm, finding his quick skills with languages and easy manner worth the cost of training him to fit into polite society – a lesson Sinbad eagerly takes to, wanting to improve his lot in life, and discovered he especially loved writing.
Initially he stuck strictly to business – refusing to risk getting involved with the spy business but desiring the coin of foreigners to buy medical treatments for his mother, traveling to Europe and America with Turkish Bankers, becoming a bit of a minor celebrity thanks to the Western fascination with “Orientalism” and his seemingly endless bounty of exotic tales. Meanwhile, he found many aspects of their culture quite fascinating, and made friends in various places. When his mother eventually passed away from illness, Sinbad decided to dabble in some espionage as he no longer had to worry about putting his love ones in danger.
But when the Great World War broke out, Sinbad returned to his home country to try to save his people from the bloodshed, and became entangled with the British-backed Arabic rebellion. As he vowed to be a pacifist, he took non-combat roles, helping to evacuate civilians from future war zones, and heading to Damascus and other key cities to gather intelligence to pass on. Whether he took a more hands on approach in securing victory for the rebels is unknown and he prefers not to talk about it, though it’s when he started to become known as an avid drinker.
Once the war ended, he – like many of those who fought with a certain British intelligence officer became disillusioned to find that the promises made to them for their own homeland had been broken; some made do by living in the newly formed Iraq, but Sinbad chose to leave entirely and immigrated to America, eventually getting a job with the boarding school thanks to some connections he made. He initially had considered it a temporary position until he gets a position elsewhere or his attempts at publishing a novel or screenplay succeeds, but he discovered he genuinely enjoys teaching and finds himself conflicted.
personality | Sinbad initially comes across as a hedonistic goofball and even an airhead, a man who wakes up after being robbed blind, and seemed unaware that people would react badly to a naked stranger walking towards them. The man is lover of wine, women, and song – especially women, to the point where he has a notorious reputation for unchivalrous behavior when intoxicated, flirting with anything in a skirt. The man is also known to sulk and pout when he not does get his own way, and shirks paperwork because he gets frustrated with work that has no visible pay off, while he can buckle down if he can see some reward for his efforts.
He also has a strong adventurous streak, being the only man in the Magi world who conquered seven dungeons and having travelled all over the world to do so. While he’s no longer allowed to enter dungeons, and as a King he is no longer able to travel as he pleased, he enjoys the times he’s allowed to travel, and is eager to hear stories of other people’s adventures. In Clarion this means he will jump at any chance to travel, and had been in almost every global power by the time he turned 23, and enjoyed every moment, and will take vacations overseas during summer break if he can get away with it, and will be become bored and listless if made to stay indoors for extended periods of time due to bad weather.
He has an easy, gregarious manner that makes people like him quickly, being someone with a very generous personality, quick to reward people that do him a favor. Sinbad is loyal to the people around him – and even considered the subjects of his kingdom to be part of an extended family. The man also has a strong empathic streak, being lulled into showing pity for Judal after the latter’s full display of crocodile tears, despite the fact that moments before Judal had broken Sindria’s protective barrier and threatened to kill him. Then there is the fact half of his generals were people that tried to kill him at one point or another, but he forgave them all and brought them to his side without a second thought. He is also is shown to get along with children, playing with them during a party in Imuchakk and during the time he was enslaved and brainwashed, he forbid the use of harsh punishments on the child slaves and took extreme concern for their health, showing even when “broken in” that his compassion still shines through. In Clarion this meant he is a pacifist by nature, and takes an exceptional concern for the well-being of students and staff members, even to the point of putting his nose in other people’s businesses.
For him, the worst possible thing is the idea that his allies start to hate and distrust him, becoming visibly upset to nearly the point of tears when his generals seem to believe he had assaulted a woman while drunk (he was proven innocent). He also shows immense guilt as a teenager when his actions leads harm to others, to the point after he instigated a slave rebellion, he begged his friend to kill him, because he felt that he took advantage of the slaves’ trust and put them into harm’s way, even though it was the only option he had to get freed. He wants people to trust him and more importantly, he wants to be the person who deserves that trust.
Then once people see past the “Airhead of the Seven Seas”, they will discover that he is a… mostly honorable monarch and a deadly warrior. While he shows signs of his thrill-seeking ways when he was young during spars – especially when using a Djinn full equip – he turns deadly serious when faced with a true life or death situation. Sinbad uses everything at his disposal to fight a dangerous foe, even things most would consider dishonorable – for example, he uses mind control magic to force Kouha to surrender, viewing the violation of Kougyoku’s mind a reasonable cost if it meant saving hundreds if not thousands of lives by forcing the civil war in Kou to end quickly. As a king dealing with diplomacy, he is fair but firm – refusing to budge on his issues, but careful enough to not be belligerent.
But underneath it all is a mind like a steel trap, quick to seize opportunities as they come into place, and willing to manipulate others – even going as far as to plant a hypnotic suggestion in Kougyoku’s mind – to get what he wants. It’s easy to assume that his power plays and manipulations meant that he does not care for the people that he used as pawns. Nothing can be further from the truth – when asked about his ‘slyness’ by Jafar, he gave a pained expression, and admitted that he became the sort of person he hated, but stated that he felt that was the only way he can operate if he wants to stop The Organization and protect smaller nations from expansionist empires. Then there was the crushed look on his face when Kougyoku confessed her crush to him when all the while he was using it to get her to become an unwittingly spy on the Kou Empire. And since he started using people, he felt that he’s gone too far to stop, so all he can do is move forwards. But as a rule, even if he just sees someone as a tool, he usually tries to angle it so that the results of his schemes will benefit them as well. While he does not have near the level of responsibility of a king in the AU, as someone who was involved with espionage and rebellion, he often ended up weighing his actions to decide what would be for the greater good, and often found himself performing unsavory acts with the goal of reducing bloodshed wherever he could, with the view that saving life is the highest priority he should have.
It’s key to note that everything about Sinbad as written is true to his character, none of the drinking, womanizing, or childish behaviors is a font – he’s genuinely all that, he just has a sharp mind under all that.

The typewriter was an old friend, a gift from a mentor who overlooked his humble beginnings and encouraged his curiosity and desire to share. Thrown from a train, sent flying across the deck in a storm, rattled from a mortar shell landing close by – come hell or high water, the thing endured, minus a “z” key that somehow snapped off, and rest of the letters worn off by grit and overuse. The sound of keys pressing, the slide, and the ringing tone that announced that he needs push it back was quite soothing, and it was easy to be lost within a rhythm of writing, whether it was trying to get a story from his childhood into something Hollywood would accept, or like he was doing now – outlining the reason why one should never call a ‘Turkish Coffee’ a ‘Turkish Coffee’ in Greece.
Nevermind it was the Arabics who created that style in the first place, he chuckled to himself at his own joke, glancing up surreptitiously as he gently pulls the sheet out from the machine. No one coming in, and the creaky halls are silent, taking the chance – he slips the flask out of his coat pocket, and starts to unscrew the cap, breathing in the sharp, nose-clearing scent chased by the smokey sweetness of molasses. There are drinks that are easier to conceal from suspicious noses, but ever since he had a taste of
añejo in Madrid, he found he strongly preferred rum over all other alcoholic drinks.
And it’s a better exorcist for nightmares then the tongue-numbing patent medicines the coach recommends, and far more effective than prayer. A sudden rap upon the door jolted him out of his thoughts, the flask nearly slipping out of his hand before he catches it, fingers slipping over the cap as he tries to close it and hide it back within his pocket in the same motion as he pushes his hair back – again uselessly trying to push his cowlick back down.
Good going, Sinbad – spill the dark rum on your shirt, that way no one would ever know of your tipple, he thought to himself sarcastically as his amber eyes darted to the door.
“Mr. Tison…?” A student’s voice called out after a moment, sounding lost. “Is this a bad time to see you?”
“Of course not, please come in – I was just putting away test materials,” He calls out, cursing his carelessness as he fixes a smile on his face, after all it sounds like the young man needed it. “Can’t let you have an unfair advantage, now can I?” Sinbad laughs as the door opens, standing up to pull a chair out.
“Yes sir…”
“Now then, tea… coffee? Teacher’s privilege, I can share some if you promise not to tell the others.” He glances back after checking to see that the halls were empty before he shut the door. “So, what seems to be the trouble?”
